Chapter 43

Mahajanga, Madagascar – The next day

Carlos waited until he could hear the music from the cocktail reception before he and Rachel approached Nguyen’s storage unit.

“I’ve deactivated surveillance on the storage unit. You’re good to go,” Nathan said over the coms.

“Thanks.” Carlos looked over at Rachel, “Are you ready? Since we already scoped this place out yesterday, the entry should be a breeze. Unless you’d rather be out on another hot date?”

Rachel shot him a glance, “You’re just jealous because you haven’t been getting any. You talked to your wife lately?” She paused for a moment and sighed, “Sorry, that was uncalled for. After you, Mr. Poppins.”

“Nathan, go live with the sound disruption,” Carlos said.

Seconds later, Nathan set off the sound trap that they had created to sound like a family of lemurs on the other side of the storage unit. When the guard left to investigate, Carlos and Rachel crept forward. They scanned the cloned ID card and entered the dark storage unit. Once the door was closed behind them, they both donned their night-vision goggles.

“The safe’s in the back,” Carlos said.

They moved toward the back of the storage unit, passing two piles of stacked suitcases and boxes of wedding decorations. Carlos reached the safe and crouched in front of it while Rachel took up watch behind him.

“Hopefully, second time’s the charm,” she whispered.

“Keep your fingers crossed.”

Nathan’s voice came over the com, “Another guard joined the guard on duty. You may have to get out of there pretty quickly.”

“Can you patch into their coms?” Rachel asked.

“Stand by.” A moment later, Nathan continued, “It sounds like they’re just investigating the noise. They haven’t noticed anything inside so far but remember the access cards are logged. If something alerts them to that, you’ll have to get out pronto.”

“Got it.” Rachel nodded to Carlos, “Make it snappy, Poppins.” Over the com, she said, “Nate, can you tell if the other guard is Jonah?”

“It’s Jonah,” Nathan confirmed.

Rachel cursed under her breath and Carlos could hear the sound of her breathing as he zeroed in on the safe. For now, he couldn’t afford the distraction of wondering what was going on with her. “Bloody hell,” he said once he realized that he wouldn’t be able to bypass the fingerprint access. “I can start by drilling, but I’ll need fingerprints. Think your spy tech can make that work?” he looked back at Rachel.

“They can get it,” Rachel said with a short nod as Carlos sent a message to Petra and Kasem to get Nguyen’s fingerprints.

Carlos prepped his drill and triggered the noise eater switch, this time on maximum volume, “Nathan, turn on the white noise patterns to mask the drill.”

Carlos waited for Nathan’s signal before he turned the drill on low and watched the bit spin for a second to test it, “How does that sound outside?” he asked Nathan. Without the sound of fireworks outside, both the noise eater attachment on the drill and the white noise outside would have to provide much wider coverage than at Hill Hearst to mask the sound.
